The .50 caliber Spotter-Tracer M48A1 is a specialized, dual-purpose military cartridge designed to take the guesswork out of aiming heavy artillery. This unique round behaves like a ballistic laser pointer, allowing gunners to visually confirm their target before firing a massive main weapon. When the rifle is fired, the intense heat and pressure of the gunpowder ignite a chemical pyrotechnic composition packed into the cavity at the base of the bullet. As the bullet flies, this composition burns brightly, leaving a brilliant, highly visible streak of light in the air. The tracer composition is engineered to delay ignition until it is about 100 yards out (so the bright flash doesn't temporarily blind the gunner) and burns cleanly for up to 1,500 yards. This allows the gunner to visually "track" the arc of the bullet through the crosshairs.
